Holy Cow! I used the Household Textile Environmental Impact Calculator to suss out my level of Environmental Damage Unites (EDUs) through my buying, wearing and disposing of fashion in a year. I was shocked to see that sit at the Fashionably Average to Fashionably Underweight mark. I think my conscious habits have gone a little soft…
What about you? Where do you sit?

We all have that person in our lives who has everything they ever wanted or needed. So, when the holidays roll around, what do you get for them? Well, how about getting them something that is really for someone else. The Kiva Gift Cards allow you to gift $25 in the name of your selected gift giver to a micro loan to help woman around the globe build sustainable businesses. Better use than another pair of cashmere socks, eh?

Do you 10Q?

10Q

As we enter into the Jewish Holidays, Jews and non-Jews alike are invited to partake in a life reflection exercise called 10Q created by the folks over at Reboot. Answer a question each day, with a very specific audience in mind… you! A year from now you will be emailed your responses as you enter in your new ones. A great tool to check in with yourself, and share with others if you wish.

Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is greening up the runways this year for shows and presentations at Lincoln Center for SS2012 collections. Through external generator reduction, and remaining generators running on biodiesel fuel blend, MBFW will quiet down and green up New York’s primary Fashion Week venue. Nice.

Do Eco-Products Really Help Save the Planet?

hand-drawn-earth

Nielsen’s 2011 Global Online Environment & Sustainability Survey states that only 20% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. But with another stat securing consumer interest in eco-products, with 83% of consumers stating that environmental policies by companies are important, there seems to be a disconnect.

Can consumers have their cake and eat it too? With a demand on companies to be green, without a public consumer base to actually buy their products… it would seem that the answer is no. Unfortunately, the confusion seems to stem from the actual impact of eco-products and practices on sustaining our planet. Call it a bad side effect of greenwashing, but consumer doubt, coupled with hard economic times, is stifling eco-buying power.

All I can say is, yes- eco products do help sustain our planet. Even a small eco effort has a real impact. So if you can muster it, do what you can with your pocket book to help support eco-aware brands.
