Sur la table.
Modern times call for modern behavior and I will admit that some of the old standards in polite dining have taken on a new spin. One thing remains constant- good manners are always in good taste. So, here are just a few rules not to be forgotten, even in the 21st century.
- When you get to the table- any table- the napkin goes in your lap.
- Cell phones should be placed on silent and stowed if you are not coordinating other plans or with people who are joining you.
- Cut and chew. Repeat- cut and chew. Cut your food into small bites and chew it thoroughly before starting in on that next bite. And if you really want to go for the gold- you should really cut each bite separately, in other words, no grid like movements where you chop it all up into bite size pieces ahead of time.
- Finish chewing before taking a sip of your beverage.
- And a couple of oldies to finish it all up- your knife and fork can rest pointing near one another forming a triangle at the top of your plate between bites (this is the resting position), and when you are finished place them side by side the across the upper right corner. Ta da!
One of my London guy friends told me that the way a girl eats is a make or break for him- “It can either be an absolute pleasure to watch or the biggest turn off!” That has always stuck with me, and luckily he said I pass… I do think it is a courtesy for the person you are dining with and in a way shows a level of respect for them. I can support that!
