Last week when I was home for a visit, I did that all-powerful cleanse of the closet! Applying honesty and swift action- I sorted through about three containers of clothing my parents so kindly stored for me. Then, I schlepped that load of goodies down to my local thrift store for a trade-in. ;) Love this exchange- it is like getting something for nothing, or as close as you can get… Plus, it makes me feel good to be part of a recycling of clothing- very eco chic.
So, there are some basic guildlines to having a successful thrift store session. Here was my plan of attack!
- The night before, go through some magazines and your favorite catalogues (online or in print) to get a sense of the trends and what you want to add to your wardrobe.
- Make a list! Once you get to the thrift store you will be awesomely overwhelmed by all the various pieces and prices, it is so easy to lose track!
- Wear make-up, just a little. You will be looking at yourself trying to figure out if you like what you are trying on, and a little make-up can help you visualize and contribute to the make or break decision. ;)
- Once there, stay focused! Remember that list… The music will be bumping and others will be swarming, trying to find that golden piece too, but don’t let it get to you. Stick to you list and keep your eyes peeled for those pieces you have already deemed updating essentials.
- When you are trying them on, do it in a timely fashion. If you don’t like what you see in the first 5 seconds, don’t sit there and try and talk yourself into it. Also, if the fit is not right, gauge how much you would spend to purchase it and how much it would cost to alter it- if it is still worth it and you know you will actually take it in, go for it!
- Go alone. You need not do this all the time, but for some serious thrifting you need to go it alone where your instincts and tastes are not influenced by others. Otherwise, take advantage of your friends’ company when you go group shopping and be open to their take, expanding your normal scope of sight.
Those were the rules I played by last week, and boy did I score! On my list to get: large embellished necklaces, a pair of ankle cowboy boots, a fun whimsicle dress, a plaid button down, a pair of high heeled booties, and a classic khaki trench. I got all of that for under $150! Oh, the joy of thrift store shopping. :)
And speaking of thrift store splendor- I believe that the Weardrobe crew will be going on a thrift store outing this afternoon. Check out our site to keep tabs on what we get! I have my list ready… :)
