The word etiquette has gotten a bad rap. It seems dated and irrelevant in today’s high- paced world. Yet, the very definition of it is exactly why it should be upheld in all situations throughout time. Grand sweeping statement, I know- but I do mean it.
Here is the thing that people miss- etiquette is not about you, it is about the people around you. It is about happily giving off a contagious attitude of positivity and consideration, um- I want some! It is about having an awareness of the people you can impact and acting upon it.
When I lived in London, I was first impressed and then influenced by the considerate patriots acting around me all the time. The polite, “Yes, Madam” or “Please, after you, I insist.” Soon my favorite thing to do was when riding the tube was to check out the other passengers and identify who I could give my seat to- a pregnant woman, an elderly person, a small child…
What the world needs now is etiquette, sweet etiquette… But seriously, if we all make an effort, even if it is just to wear a smile on our faces, we will make the world a better place, enhancing the general environment around us. And, if you are ready to take the plunge (because my post has so inspired you… hehe) you may implement the 10 Commandments of Everyday Etiquette as outlined by Ruth Cullen in The Little Pink Book of Etiquette:
- Focus on others. It’s not about you.
- Think before you act.
- Think before you speak.
- Wait your turn. (I always forget this one!)
- Listen when others speak (another gem for me to work on…)
- Pick up after yourself.
- Assist those in need.
- Respect people who are different from you.
- Be patient and kind.
- Smile.
Right! I can do that!
