Just before moving to New York, my friend and I went for the glorious girl bonding ritual of having a manicure done together. She selected her favorite colors as did I. Essie Limo-scene was her choix du jour and I opted for a soft pink-based glitter vanish- only, I didn’t stop there. I was in a playful mood and feeling like I needed to express myself a bit further, so I picked out a second color (Bermuda Shorts, also by Essie- a vibrant fucshia purple), and instead of layering the two to create a new color- which is my traditional fare, I decided I wanted one single solitary figure to showcase that second color.
So, what you get is a beautiful manicure with symmetry and perfect polish application, and then one nail that is the cool kid on the block- which in turn makes me feel like the cool kid on the block. It’s my piece of flare, if you will. It makes me feel more like me- a girl who doesn’t want to blend in with the masses, but doesn’t want to draw attention to myself in an overstated way.
Instead, it is subtle and quietly noticed, sometimes commented upon and other times followed. So I have kept the one-off nail going strong- changing its color when I change the others and adjusting it to compliment or contrast the other hues I have going on. Don’t know how long I will keep this trend going, but for now it serves me quite well and provides that certain something that makes me feel more unique.
