Hurray for HighStreet Heroes!

They say one person can make a difference and I believe this to be true.  Because if one person exercises their voice, power and influence they will change the world.  Change in and of itself is happening around us all the time, and it is up to us as individuals to dictate how that change is manifest.

One area that is changing quite rapidly, thanks to awareness and initiative, is in clothes manufacturing.  Designers, major corporations and the press are all riding the new green wave in fashion.  Fairtrade, organic cotton, reduced carbon footprints…these are all ways that companies are subscribing to the responsibilities of a global citizen.  More and more companies who are in a position to have a real impact are responding to the demands for more ethical, environmental and ecological production.  Now it is your turn to contribute to the movement!  Support these companies and become a conscious consumer.

You can start with your favourite highstreet brands.

Marks and Spencer- they already use 1/3 of the world’s Fairtrade cotton in their clothing production.

Sainsbury- the TU range uses only West African Fairtrade cotton.

Top Shop- collaborated with People Tree (the Fairtrade fashion label) to produce a fashionably ethical line.

Nike- offers a 100% organic line and you can recycle your old trainers.

American Apparel- sweatshop free and lovin it!  Plus they do an all-organic line as well.

These companies have evolved (and will continue to do so) because you- the consumer- demand it.  So, stay true to your beliefs and do your homework regarding the companies you support. Write to them to tell them you are pleased with what they are doing or conversely write to those companies that are not being responsible citizens and tell them what you would like to see from them.  One voice and one action becomes many and you can make a difference.
