At home haircare.

I am a big fan of the at home DIY haircare for two reasons.  One- you save loads of money and two- you get what you want. Ok, ok- I should clarify that this is more for maintenance and not overhaul makeovers.

I find this approach to be very useful when you are growing out your hair or are just being casual about it for the summer. Maybe you just want to bring in a little colour and liven things up a bit!

All you need is to pick out a semi-permanent hair dye (very important to get semi-permanent so that you don’t create layers of colour that your stylist will have to fight against when you do go get it done professionally), tin foil, a flat fanned paint brush (about 1 inch) and a fine-toothed comb with a point on one end.

Ok, so choose a colour that is only one to two shades lighter or darker than your natural (or what you have now- you can also try to match what you have) and pay attention to whether or not it is cool or warm.  Typically tan skin can go the cool route whereas pale skin is better suited for warm hues.

Then get your solution mixed up and ready, and have fun sectioning out pieces (either thin or thick) around your face and through the crown of your head and zig-zagging the point of your comb through to get a more natural look.  Paint the smaller pieces left after the zig zag and either wrap them in pre-cut 3x5 inch strips of foil (a bit safer for a more professional look).  You can also try out the new freestyle method of painting in colour.  Here you do not use any foil and just pick out pieces that you want to add colour to.  It is a bit more blocky and good way to add interesting depth to your hair.

Follow the instructions on the box for how long to leave the colour- making sure not to leave it on for too long (especially if you are going lighter and using a lifter).  Rinse with coldish water (better for letting the colour have a longer life) and use a good conditioner.

You will have enhanced colour for 4-6 weeks! So, if you are bored with your look but not sure you want to commit to a massive or expensive change- give this at home treatment a whirl. ;)
